From compliance challenge to scalable traceability: how Walter Matter operationalized EUDR with Picterra

Walter Matter, a century-old family-owned, independent merchant specialized in coffee and cocoa trading needed a reliable solution to ensure their supply chain adhered to EUDR requirements.

Solution:

EUDR compliance and deforestation monitoring

Commodity:

Coffee and Cocoa

Challenge

Before EUDR, sustainability efforts in commodity trading often focused on certified supply chains and targeted programs. The regulation expanded this scope significantly—requiring plot-level verification and evidence across nearly all sourcing flows.

This shift introduced a new level of complexity. Coffee and cocoa supply chains rely on thousands of smallholder farms, with data that is often fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult to standardize.

For Walter Matter, a lean team managing a global network of suppliers, the challenge was clear: to process real-world data at scale—standardizing fragmented inputs, ensuring data quality, and generating reliable, verifiable compliance evidence, all without increasing operational complexity.

Solution

Walter Matter partnered with Picterra to configure a system tailored to their operational needs and real-world constraints—enabling scalable, reliable traceability without added complexity.

The system allows them to:

  • Upload farm data in any format – Automatically correct geometry and data inconsistencies
  • Perform satellite-based deforestation risk assessments
  • Generate transparent, auditable reports
  • Operate without requiring GIS expertise

What surprised me most was how quickly a gap between two very different worlds closed. We are a traditional commodity merchant, highly operational and risk-aware. Picterra is rooted in geospatial AI and data science culture. We were sharing real operational constraints and messy real-world data, and they were adapting models and workflows to address them. I expected a tool. What we actually built was a working method together.

Today, our team can run assessments and interpret results without needing a GIS background, which I would not have expected at the start.

I think with such a platform, we have eyes on the ground and this really helped us get a better grasp of our supply chains and where the commodities we purchase and sell come from. It also allows us to see gaps, risks and where we should focus our attention in terms of environmental risks.

We've seen what climate is doing to our sector, the risks it poses. So having eyes on the ground from our headquarters in Geneva and being able to have all this wealth of information in our interactions with suppliers, it really makes us much stronger and better informed when we decide where we source from.
